International Symposium on Integrative Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics is a transversal and frontier area, strategic for Chile and Latin America. Its basis relies on the interplay between computer sciences, statistics, mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, chemistry, physics and all natural sciences. In summary, it is an interdisciplinary field focused in the development and usage of software and algorithms to understand biological data. Power-up the local data-driven biology ecosystem is crucial for the scientific, economic and cultural development. However, particularly worrisome is the fact that Chile does not have an annual meeting focused specifically on the field of bioinformatics and computational biology, with the area possessing only a small space of diffusion in some national meetings related with more general area (e.g. Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology). The absence of a meeting of this kind prevent the interaction and diffusion of the field, hindering the development of the area at a national level.

Aiming to boost the bioinformatics and computational biology ecosystem in Chile and Latin America, we created the SIBI - International Symposium on Integrative Bioinformatics (Simposio Internacional de Bioinformática Integrativa). Our goal is to have an annual meeting on the field, generating an opportunity for latin american students, researchers and companies to interact and diffuse knowledge. In 2014 we organized at the Universidad Mayor (Santiago, Chile) a pilot meeting with 162 participants. In 2018 we organized the second edition in Santiago with 102 attendees, with the certainty that we will have it every year throughout the country. The third edition will be held in Pucón, in a three days event, with posterl and oral presentations selected from the public for the first time.

Topics showcased in the conference will include machine learning applied to natural sciences, sequence analysis, evolution and phylogeny, comparative genomics, protein structure, molecular and molecular dynamics, molecular evolution, gene regulation and transcriptomics, RNA biology and bioinformatics, proteomics, systems biology, ontologies, biological networks, databases and data integration, text and data mining and information extraction, conservation genomics and human health.
